HSE Investigation Into Serious Workplace Accident. Building Company Fined:
A contractor working on a house roof in Darlington in July last year was left in a vegetative state after falling to the ground whilst removing debris from the roof. He fell to the ground as he moved across the roof to access a ladder. Fifty year old Mark Lambton suffered severe brain damage as the result of the head injury sustained in the six metre fall. He was in a drug induced coma for two months and there is little hope of improvement to his condition in the future.
The health & Safety Exective (HSE) found that the company who employed him – J Wilson Home Improvements - were at fault because they had no safe procedures in place for working at height. The director Mr Wilson was fined £12,000 after a head injury claim and ordered to pay £3,000 costs after pleading guilty to safety breaches.
